CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The silence stretched out as Esther stared at the man before her. She’d said nothing yet, her lips unable to move to try and make some sense of his confession. She was alone with a murderer—one who would openly admit to being such a killer too.

His stocky figure slowly sat down in front of her. There was something almost familiar about him, yet as fast as Esther thought it, the thought left her. She had never seen a man with such an awful burn on his face before. She felt certain she would have remembered a conversation with this man too had there been one in the past.

“You didn’t react,” he said as he sat down in front of her. He crossed his legs with his knees up so high that he could rest his elbows on top.

“I...” Esther attempted to speak but her mouth was too dry. Any satiation she’d had from the swallows of water was gone after his confession.

The corner of the man’s lips turned up—the side that had not been affected by his burn. He was smiling, almost gleefully, holding in a temptation to laugh.

“You should see your face. You’re looking at me as if I’m the one who is the monster between us.”

Esther managed to lean forward this time to get a better look at him.

“Why do you think I’m a monster?” she asked slowly, the words coming out with difficulty. At once, his smile vanished.

“That is a conversation for another time. We are done speaking for now.” He stood to his feet, uncrossing his legs, and turned his back on her.

“Wait,” Esther pleaded to his retreating figure. He was now a man of action. He crossed the crypt and reached down behind the sarcophagus, lifting what appeared to be a backpack in the darkness. He slung it across the lid of the effigy, sprawling the unzipped flaps open as he searched inside. “Tell me who you are.”

“Why?” he asked, the word harsh. “What purpose would that serve?

“Give me something to call you.” Esther’s words made him pause momentarily in his search through the bag.

“You can call me...” He lifted his head, staring at the ceiling of the crypt in thought. “Reece.”

“Reece,” she murmured, trying out the name for size. She hadn’t heard the name before in relation to Abner or to the investigation that Cameron Hardy had brought to their door. It was possible he gave her a fake name.

“Up,” he ordered, turning to her as he collected something chrome, glinting for a second in the moonlight that streamed in as a single beam through the window.

Esther moved to her feet, struggling as her body swayed. She lifted a hand automatically to her head, checking the wound another time. It had long since stopped bleeding, but the dizziness wasn’t helping.

“Faster.”

“I’m moving as fast as I can,” Esther muttered, aware that he was making his way toward her. “Blame my sluggishness on yourself. You are the one who hit me, aren’t you?”

He stopped in
